What is an 光纤 Coating/Buffer?

光纤 Coating ColorsOptical fiber coatings/buffers play an important role in protecting the fiber from its intended environment. The coating protects the glass fiber from mechanical 和 environmental stresses in application. The primary coating may be applied in a single or dual layer. Coatings are applied during the fiber draw process 和 before touching any external surface. 为 额外的保护, a layer of buffer material may be added. The buffer material provides additional mechanical protection for the fiber 和 helps preserve the waveguide.

Fiber Optic Coatings:

Acrylate Fiber Coating

Photocurable liquid coating compositions adapted to provide primary coatings for optical glass fibers. St和ard telecoms 光纤s use a dual coating of acrylate (a softer inner coating 和 a harder outer layer). Specialty fibers typically use one coat.

High-Temperature Acrylate

High-temperature acrylate is used because of its resistance to steam 和 电缆 gels or when the fiber will be used in a harsh environment requiring extra protection. 通常用于 工业传感 military/aerospace 应用程序.


Non-toxic 和 rugged, this coating is ideal for medical 应用程序. It adheres to the class surface of the silica “healing” micro-defects thereby improving the tensile strength of the fiber 和 retarding static fatigue. Used in industrial 应用程序 where the hard polymer enables a connector to be crimped directly onto the fiber 和 the fiber cleaved mechanically. Resistant to water vapor 和 a range of chemicals, 硅胶是柔软的, 和 requires buffering for protection, usually with thermoplastics like ETFE, PFA或PEEK. Silicone dampens attenuation inducing compression 和 is easily strippable.


Typically used to coat 光纤s designed for distributed temperature sensing 应用程序. Depending on the grade of Acrylate, mid-temperature range up to 135 ºC for up to 20 years 和 higher temperatures up to 200 ºC, 可以支持. Optical fibers using this coating combination are protected against moisture across the temperature range. They are resistant to water 和 chemicals 和 are cushioned for deployment 和 service in harsh environments.

Frequently used as a tertiary layer where other coatings like carbon 和 silicone may comprise other layers. PEEK provides a high Young’s modulus outer layer with excellent chemical 和 abrasion resistance, low thermal expansion, 和 is a zero-halogen material providing low smoke 和 toxicity.

Polybutylene terephthalate PBT

Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) delivers excellent short-term mechanical properties, such as high strength, toughness 和 stiffness as well as good practical impact. PBT’s high heat-deflection temperatures 和 high temperature index ratings help components withst和 both short term thermal excursions 和 long-term heat exposure. It has robust chemical resistance to a wide range of chemicals. Optical fibers 和 fiber optic 电缆s jacketed with PBT would be used in aerospace, utilities 和 industrial 应用程序.


Polypropylene may be used as an alternative to 聚氯乙烯 (PVC) as a buffer for 光纤 in LSZH 电缆. It emits less smoke 和 no toxic halogens, which may lead to production of acid in high-temperature conditions.


PE has excellent properties of moisture 和 weather resistance 和 has good electrical properties over a wide temperature range. It’s also abrasion resistant. Typically used as a jacket material for 外面的工厂 fiber optic 电缆s.

LSZH (low-smoke, zero halogen) PE-PP

LSZH jacket is free of halogenated materials which can be transformed into toxic 和 corrosive matter during combustion. LSZH is a good 电缆 jacket choice for enclosed installations.

Polyvinylchloride PVC

PVC is usually low-cost, flexible, fairly rugged. It can be formulated to function in a variety of environments 和 应用程序. It is used as a 电缆 jacket material for both indoor 和 outdoor 电缆s.

Polyvinylidene Fluoride PVDF

A PVDF coating does not react with most solvents 和 chemicals. It offers excellent resistance to abrasions 和 wear, high dielectric strength, is resistant to weathering, 和 can extinguish itself in the case of a fire. They also do not produce much smoke if there is a fire.  这种涂料 is a good choice for indoor plenum 电缆s.


Properties of TPU include: high abrasion resistance, low-temperature performance, 高抗剪强度, 高弹性, transparency 和 oil 和 grease resistance. Used in industrial grade 电缆s.

Halogen free Flame retardant Polyurethane HFFR

无卤, flame retardant (HFFR) thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) compositions are replacing halogen-containing, flame retardant TPU compositions in a number of 应用程序 including, 但不限于, the insulation 和 protective jackets for the wire 和 电缆 associated with personal electronic devices 和 电缆s deployed in enclosed spaces. These HFFR TPU compositions can provide excellent flame-retardant performance 和 mechanical properties including excellent flexibility.

Hytrel® 山丘

Thermoplastic polyester elastomers (山丘) provide the flexibility of rubbers 和 the strength of plastics. It has superior physical properties compared to most fluoropolymers. It also exhibits outst和ing resistance to weather 和 aging. ETFE is typically used as a buffer for the OFS HCS® fibers used in industrial datacom 应用程序.

Perfluoroalkoxy Teflon™ PFA
